دانشگاه دولتی سن‌پترزبورگ (Saint Petersburg State University)، قدیمی‌ترین و یکی از معتبرترین دانشگاه‌های روسیه است که در رتبه‌بندی EECA در سال 2018 رتبۀ چهارم را کسب کرد. دانشگاه دولتی سن‌پترزبورگ را پتر کبیر در سال 1724 تأسیس کرد و حدود 30،000 دانشجو دارد که حدود 3000 نفر از آنهادانشجویان خارجی علاقمند به تحصیل در روسیه هستند. دانشگاه  سن پترزبورگ بیش از 400 ساختمان دارد که 25 دانشکده را در خود جای داده است و دانشجویان این دانشگاه به مجموعۀ زیادی از موزه‌ها، آثار تاریخی و مکان‌های هنری دسترسی دارند.

در 6 ژوئن، کواکوارلی سیموندز (Quacquarelli Symonds) رتبه‌بندی QS را منتشر کرد. در این رتبه‌بندی، دانشگاه سن پترزبورگ نسبت به سال گذشته ۵ پله صعود داشته است و به مجموع 23 ٪ دانشگاه‌های برتر جهان پیوست.
دانشگاه دولتی سن پترزبورگ به بهترین شکل، عملکرد خود را بهبود داده است. در دو سال گذشته، بر اعتبار علمی دانشگاه 15 درصد افزوده شده و درصد اعتبار کارفرمایان همواره بیشتر شده است و در سال گذشته عملکرد دانشگاه 20 درصد بهبود داشته است.
دانشکدۀ تحصیلات تکمیلی مدیریت (Graduate School of Management) در رتبه‌بندی Financial Times European Business Schools Rankings 2017 به رتبۀ 57 صعود کرد و تنها دانشکدۀ مدیریت کسب و کار در روسیه است که در این رتبه‌بندی قرار دارد.
در 4 دسامبر، فاینشال تایمز (Financial Times)، رتبه‌بندی دانشکده های کسب و کار اروپا در سال 2017 را منتشر کرد که 95 دانشکدۀ برتر کسب و کار در اروپا را شامل می‌شود. دانشگاه سن پترزبورگ (SPbU) تنها دانشگاه روسی است که به مدت پنج سال در این رتبه‌بندی گنجانده شده و از جایگاه 64 به 57 ارتقاء یافته است.

بر اساس رتبه‌بندی QS دانشگاه‌های جهان، دانشگاه دولتی سن پترزبورگ در سال جاری جزو 1٪ دانشگاه‌های پیشتاز جهان قرار دارد؛ 29000 دانشگاه از سراسر جهان در این رتبه‌بندی گنجانده می‌شوند.

 

پردیس دانشگاه دولتی سن پترزبورگ
دانشگاه دولتی سن پترزبورگ در دو پردیس اصلی واقع شده است: در جزیره واسیلوسکی (Vasilievsky)در مرکز شهر و در پیتروف (Peterhof)یا همان پترودورتس سابق(Petrodvorets)، در حومۀ جنوب غربی که از طریق راه آهن از پایانه بالتی اسکای ریل (Baltiysky Rail Terminal)قابل دسترس است. توالو کالجیا (Twelve Collegia) ساختمان اصلی دانشگاه است که در جزیره واسیلوسکی قرار دارد و شامل کتابخانه، دانشکده زیست شناسی و موسسه علوم زمین است. دانشکده زبان شناسی و دانشکده مطالعات شرقی، به صورت مشترک از ساختمان قرن هجدهمی پترین باروک (Petrine Baroque)که در نزدیکی دیواره یونیورسیتی تسکایا (Universitetskaya) بولشایای نوا(Bolshaya Neva) قرار دارد، استفاده می کنند.
این سازه توسط دومنیکو ترزینی طراحی شده و در اصل کاخ پیتر دوم روسیه بوده است. دانشکده روانشناسی در مقابل آن در دیواره آدمیرال ماکاروفِ مالایا نوا واقع شده است. دانشکده تحصیلات عالی مدیریت، دانشکده روزنامه نگاری و ارتباطات جمعی، دانشکده پزشکی، دانشکده دندانپزشکی و فن آوری های پزشکی، دانشکده حقوق و دانشکده مطالعات نظامی، همه در جزیره واسیلوسکی قرار دارند. چهار دانشکده علوم اجتماعی دیگر در شرق مرکز شهر در جنوب نوا قرار دارند: دانشکده اقتصاد در نزدیکی ایستگاه متروی چرنی شوسکیا (Chernyshevskaya) واقع شده است، و دانشکده جامعه شناسی، دانشکده علوم سیاسی و دانشکده روابط بین الملل در ساختمان های تاریخی اسمولنی کونونت (Smolny Convent) واقع شده اند.

پردیس جدید حومه جنوبی شامل دانشکده ریاضیات کاربردی و فرآیندهای کنترل، موسسه شیمی، دانشکده ریاضی و مکانیک و دانشکده فیزیک است که در ساختمان های مدرن در پیتروف واقع شده اند. در نزدیکی پردیس پیتروف یک پارک زیبا به نام سرجیوکا (Sergievka) وجود دارد. در این پارک، ساختمان دانشکده زیست شناسی قرار دارد. یکی از مناظر پارک سرجیوکا تندیس سنگی سر یک قهرمان است.
